Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering an early Victorian 10kt. yellow gold longguard chain necklace c. 1840. The chain is in an interesting "S" box chain style necklace in a fine design. It is 48" long making it easily doubled or trebled, if desired. A pendant or charm can be added for variety. It has a 14kt. yellow gold trombone clasp which is a replacement. The chain weighs 26.9 grams.

Antique longguard chains were used for a number of purposes. They remained popular from around 1835 through the early 1900's. Chains could be used as looped watch chains, fashionable necklaces (sometimes with a pendant), or as a preventative against pick pockets (carrying small purses or other valuables). Typically made of gold or sterling silver, they were designed with intricate links.

The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing.
