Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a late Victorian amethyst and pearl fringe necklace, in 14kt. yellow gold c. 1890. The knife edge bars are accented with thirteen prong set, oval, faceted medium dark purple amethysts. The amethysts are graduated in size, 4-7.5mm X 5.5mm, 4-7.9mm X 6.0mm, 4-8.25mm X 6.5mm and 1-8.4mm X 7.0mm. The total estimated carat weight is 5.7 carats. Each amethyst is in a crown style claw setting. On each knife edge bar is mounted a natural prong set, round half pearl, graduated in size from 2mm to 2.5mm. The amethysts and pearls are on a fine link trace chain that is 16" long. The necklace weighs 10.8 grams.
The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing.
The amethysts were tested using a standard jeweler's gemstone tester. The amethyst and pearl sizes were calculated using a standard jeweler's caliper. The pearls are assumed to be natural since the piece pre-dates cultured pearls. The gemstone carat weights were calculated based on standard measurement practices. The stones were not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight.
