Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering an Art Nouveau era sterling silver hatpin c. 1890. This large hatpin features an oval angel wrapped in flowers and leaves and completed in repousee. The angel wings make up the oval outside framework of the piece. The piece is finely detailed. The centerpiece is 2-1/8” tall X 1-3/8” wide” (maximum dimensions). The stick is 6” long and has a twisted shank. The head of the pin flips to allow placement in the correct position on the hat or coat. The clutch is original to the piece. This pin weighs 13.7 grams. It is marked “925” for sterling silver. There are no other marks.
Repoussee is a technique in metalworking where the metal is hammered and shaped from the back side to create a design in relief on the front. Gold, silver, copper and alloys can be used for repoussee work.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The piece is marked “925”.
