Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a pair of mid-century modern sterling silver earrings by Sam Kramer c. 1950. These cool earrings feature a round disc surmounted by a half dome. The earrings give the illusion of an eclipse. They are about 1" round and feature screw backs. They have the Sam Kramer maker's mark of a mushroom in a circle. For like the mushroom, Kramer said his jewelry grows in dark and gloomy places and is eerie and mysterious. The earrings weigh 19.1 grams.

Sam Kramer was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1913. In 1939 he opened his studio in New York City's Greenwich Village. His studio has been described as "surreal", complete with a front door knob that required a "shake" to open. His jewelry was just as unconventional, using taxidermy eyes, meteorites and fossils in his designs. Despite being an eccentric, he was also an instrumental part of the middle 20th century jewelry scene with Art Smith, Ed Levin, Ed Wiener, and Paul Lobel.

The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "Sterling".

When you own vintage handmade jewelry, you wear a design that is unique and represents the artist's vision. It is made by a skilled craftsman and can have features which are only found in this piece. The jewelry may exhibit the marks of the craftsman. It will not be perfect.
