Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a pair of Etruscan Revival or Archaeological Revival style earrings in 14kt. yellow gold c. 1880. These earrings showcase two oval, bezel set, cabochon cut, deep blue lapis lazuli natural, un-dyed stones that are 9mm X 12mm each. These "terraced" stones are accented by wire rope twist and are mounted above the rope work. Below the rope twisting are wire strung, natural seed pearls which accent the dark blue lapis lazuli perfectly .The earrings have a shepherd's crook style back with a loop closure and are for pierced ears. Each piece is 3/4" tall X 5/8" wide (maximum dimensions) with a total drop from the hook of 1-1/4".

Designs, textures and patterns with wire rope twisting, beading can be made using granulation techniques. Granulation was a technique that applied gold to a surface metal using heat, but without the appearance of having been soldered. This design work had been used since ancient times and became popular again during the mid 19th. century when the great archaeological explorations were being conducted in Italy, Egypt, Sumeria, Turkey and elsewhere that jewelry was found that had used this technique.

Lapis Lazuli has been used since ancient times for jewelry, pigments, inlay, mosaics, carvings, makeup and amulets. The opaque stone combines the blue of the heavens and the gold of the sun. It is considered to be an emblem of success in Jewish tradition. In the Christian faith, lapis lazuli was considered to be the stone of the Virgin Mary. In Victorian symbolism, Lapis lazuli could stand for “good luck” or “love me,” depending on its usage and setting.

The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The earrings are marked "14K". The lapis size was calculated using a standard jeweler's caliper. The stones were not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight.
