Caroline’s Jewelry with a Past is offering a mid-century modern handwrought pair of earrings by Nita Lustig c. 1955. These earrings feature a square with rounded corners and rolled over on one side. The earrings are brushed silver with oxidized "shadows" under the fold. The earrings are 15/16” wide X 3/4” tall. They have clip back fittings. Each piece is marked “Lustig” + “Sterling”.
Nita Overbaugh Lustig was born 1914 probably in Chicago, Illinois. She was married to Erwin Lustig in 1943 and began her studio jewelry shop about 1950. The small amount of jewelry by her on the market is indicative of 1950-1960 design elements. Almost everything she made was completed in sterling silver. Occasionally, copper pieces or silver items with copper parts are available, but all of her jewelry is handmade. She died in Naples, Florida in 1997. Not much is known about her life, but the rare pieces of her jewelry on the market are unique and show an individualism of style.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The earrings are marked “Sterling”.
When you own vintage jewelry, you wear a design that is unique and represents the artist’s vision. It is made by a skilled craftsman and can have features which are only found in this piece. The jewelry may exhibits marks of the craftsman. It will not be perfect. The jewelry will show age appropriate tarnish, unless we state otherwise.
