Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a link bracelet by Margot de Taxco (Margot vanVoorhies Carr) in her iconic "AM PM" design circa 1955. The design number for this piece is #5201. The bracelet features 6 solid plaques with alternating "AM" and "PM" in raised silver block letters over an oxidized or blackened surface. These plaques have solid hinges to create a link style bracelet. Each link of the bracelet is 1-1/4" wide X 11/16" tall (maximum dimensions). Hanging from one plaque is an hourglass with textured "sand". The hourglass measures 1-3/4" tall X 3/4" wide (maximum dimensions). The hourglass is oval shaped and three-dimensional. The bracelet can accommodate a wrist of 7-1/2". It has a safety chain which opens the bracelet an additional 3" to allow it to fit easily over the wrist. The safety chain also holds the unusual hinge pin style clasp. Simplistically, it is a pin which fits through the hinge making the catch "invisible". This closure was an early Margot de Taxco feature. The piece is marked "Margot de Taxco" + "Made in Mexico" + "Sterling" + "5201" + the early Eagle 16 mark. It weighs weighs 53.3 grams.
Margot van Voorhies Carr, known as Margot de Taxco , was originally from San Francisco and moved to Taxco Mexico in the 1930's. She was married for a time to Antonio Castillo who was a partner in Los Castillo, a prominent silver manufacturer. She did a number of their designs in the late 30's and early 40's. Los Castillo continued to use her designs for a number of years. When she left the marriage and started her own jewelry production, she began with many of her basic Los Castillo designs and modified them to her own tastes. Some of Margot's early pieces and Los Castillo designs overlap. Later, her designs became key to her unique style and featured many enamel pieces. This piece has become one of her most identifiable pieces.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "Sterling".
