Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a sterling silver cuff hard bangle bracelet by Los Castillo c. 1980. This design was probably created by Margot Van Voorhies Carr when she was married and working with Antonio Castillo, it is Los Castillo's original style #263. This piece features a dramatic overlapping carved pattern filled with movement. The layered and rounded form of the bracelet has the impression of snake scales, one on top of the next. The undulating scales with light and dark swirls are each centered by a silver ball. This piece is reminiscent of the Aztec feathered serpent or dragon, Quetzacoatl used in many items from Taxco by WIlliam Spratling, Margot de Taxco, Los Castillo and others. This is an early Los Castillo design. The bracelet is 1-1/2" wide and can accommodate a wrist of 6-1/2" to 7". It weighs 77.4 grams. The back is marked "Los Castillo" + "Taxco" + "Made in Mexico" (indistinctly stamped) + "925" + design number "263" + "TM-23" (makers registration mark).

The Los Castillo workshop was founded in Taxco Mexico in 1939 by the Castillo brothers, Antonio, Coco and Chato, along with Antonio's wife Margot van Voorhies Carr (later Margot de Taxco), and their cousin Salvador Teran. The brothers worked for William Spratling during the 1930's. Margot did a number of the early Los Castillo designs until she left about 1949 to start her own business. Los Castillo is still in business and is the longest continuously operating silversmith in Taxco. Design and craftsmanship have always been a hallmark of the workshop.

The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "925" OR 925/1000 parts silver equal to the standard for sterling.

Please note that vintage jewelry has been pre-owned, worn, and loved by its owner. The charm and beauty of vintage silver Taxco jewelry comes from the unique variations and characteristics inherent in hand-wrought silver. You may be able to see the artisan's tool marks. It is not new and perfect, nor should it be. This piece has been polished, but does show minimal tarnish commensurate with age.
