Caroline's Jewelry with a Past has been on the web since 1995
Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a vintage sterling silver link bracelet by Los Castillo c. 1955. This piece is designed as a 15/16" scroll surmounted and centered by a ball with an additional row of balls attached along the bottom of the scroll. This bracelet features a simplistic, yet dramatic design. The raised three dimensional look has an oxidized base. The scrolls are attached by silver loops and alternate so that the bracelet will lay correctly no matter which way it is placed on the wrist. It has a simple hook clasp. The bracelet is 7-1/2" long with an attached safety chain which opens an additional 3-1/2". It has a circular maker's mark with "Los Castillo" + "Taxco" + Sterling" + Made in Mexico" + design number “325" + the eagle mark “15”. The pieces are cast, assembled and hand finished. The bracelet weighs 41.8 grams.
The Los Castillo workshop was founded in Taxco Mexico in 1939 by the Castillo brothers, Antonio, Coco and Chato, along with Antonio's wife Margot van Voorhies Carr (later Margot de Taxco), and their cousin Salvador Teran. The brothers worked for William Spratling during the 1930's. Margot did a number of the early Los Castillo designs until she left about 1949 to start her own business. Los Castillo is still in business and is the longest continuously operating silversmith in Taxco. Design and craftsmanship has always been a hallmark of the workshop. The design of this piece is one of the shop's early successes.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "Sterling".
Please note that vintage jewelry has been pre-owned, worn, and loved by its owner. The charm and beauty of vintage Los Castillo jewelry comes from the unique variations and characteristics inherent in hand-wrought silver. You may be able to see the artisan's tool marks. It is not new and perfect, nor should it be. Vintage silver items may also show age appropriate tarnish.
