Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a sterling silver brooch and earring demi-parure by Los Castillo of Taxco, design #595. This set is pre-Eagle (before 1948). The pieces feature stylized flowers with a central half dome surrounded by curling "leaves" and applied balls along one side of the "dome/flower". An abstract look, these pieces suggest the influence of Margot de Taxco (Margot van Voorhies Carr). The brooch is meant to have the pin stem worn in a north to south position. The brooch is 2-3/8" tall X 1-3/4" wide (maximum dimensions). The brooch fixture has a safety style clasp. It is marked "Los Castillo" + "Taxco" + "Sterling" + "Mexico" + "595" (design number). It weighs 19.8 grams. The earrings are 1" tall X 3/4" wide (maximum dimensions) and have screw back fixtures. One earring is marked "Los Castillo" + "Taxco" + "595" (design number). The second earring is marked "Los Castillo" + "Made in Mexico" + "595". The earrings weigh 9.4 grams total. The total weight of the set is 29.2 grams.

The Los Castillo workshop was founded in Taxco Mexico in 1939 by the Castillo brothers, Antonio, Coco and Chato, along with Antonio's wife Margot van Voorhies Carr (later Margot de Taxco), and their cousin Salvador Teran. The brothers worked for William Spratling during the 1930's. Margot did a number of the early Los Castillo designs until she left about 1949 to start her own business. Los Castillo is still in business and is the longest continuously operating silversmith in Taxco. Design and craftsmanship have always been a hallmark of the workshop.

The silver content of these pieces has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver of the brooch is marked "Sterling". This is a three piece set.

When you own vintage handmade jewelry, you wear a design that is unique and represents the artist's vision. It is made by a skilled craftsman and can have features which are only found in this piece. The jewelry may exhibit the marks of the craftsman. It will not be perfect. The jewelry will show age appropriate tarnish, unless we state otherwise.
