Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering sterling silver brooch by Danish artist and jeweler, Niels Eric From (also seen as N. E. From) circa 1940. This brooch features a dramatic engraved leaf. The piece is handcrafted and assembled and is an original N. E. From design. The brooch is 1-3/8" round (maximum dimensions). The brooch weighs 11.9 grams. The back is marked "Sterling" + "Denmark" + "N.E. From".
Niels Eric From, at aged 23, was a trained silversmith. He opened his shop in 1931 and for the next 40 years, his floral-inspired pieces highlighted Denmark's Arts and Crafts period. The metalwork is simple, lithe and supple. There are obscure details of oxidation, carved out metal, surface etching on many pieces of his work. From's designs are masterful examples of his ability to achieve unique detail and sinuous fluidity in simple forms. (Annotated from "Splendor: A Celebration of Jewelry Designers" by Carlotta STM). From's early pieces reflect his love of nature and natural looks. This is an example of his style. The pieces which reflect a more bold and stark look were designed by someone other than From in the late 1960's.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "Sterling".
When you own vintage handmade jewelry, you wear a design that is unique and represents the artist's vision. It is made by a skilled craftsman and can have features which are only found in this piece. The jewelry may exhibit the marks of the craftsman. It will not be perfect. The jewelry will show age appropriate tarnish, unless we state otherwise.
