Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a 14kt. yellow gold brooch c. 1870 with exquisite French blue enamel with cut away gold work embellished by 19 small natural seed pearls in a floral motif with ribbons. This 3 dimensional brooch is fine in all its details. The vertical deep blue enamel plaque rests atop an octagonal gold piece decorated with gold smooth and textured overlay curlicues. The edge is pie crust style texturing. The piece rests on a third gold plaque adorned with black enameling. Teardrop shaped briolette lapis lazuli drops finish this brooch to perfection. The lapis is a deep cobalt blue color. The outer pieces are 16mm. long. The inner lapis is 20mm. long. The back is open and possibly contained a frame for holding hair or another treasure and has a chatelaine loop. The pin stem is silver and the safety closure has been replaced, but otherwise the piece is in excellent condition. It is 1-1/2" wide and 2" tall including the drops. This is a very interesting piece which includes a variety of design elements from the Victorian period and is probably a custom made item. The piece weighs 14.2 grams.
The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing.
