Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a handmade gilded sterling silver brooch/pin holding an anonymous ancient coin of the goddess Roma helmeted. The coin is a silver denarius from the Republic of Rome era c. 200BC. On the obverse is the immortal Dioscuri horses gifted to the world by the gods Hermes and Hera. The coin is held in a gilded sterling silver roll over bezel and attached to gilded sterling silver fasces, the symbol of power and jurisdiction in ancient Rome. The fasces is a bound bundle of rods, usually of wood holding an axe. The symbol began with the Etruscans and was later adopted by the Romans. The frame is designed to hold the coin without damage. The coin is 3/4" round. The brooch is 2-5/8" long (maximum dimensions). The closure is a safety clasp. The piece weighs 12.3 grams.
