Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a gold cased silver late Georgian brooch circa 1840. The brooch features 3 light blue, round shaped, faceted and bezel set aquamarine gemstones. The stones are set in a navette shaped mounting. The frame features swirl work with balls. The piece is 1-3/4" X 1-1/8" (maximum dimensions). The brooch has a C-clasp.
Aquamarine is in the beryl family, along with emeralds. The round shaped stones in this brooch measure 3- 7.5mm. The total weight is 2.0 carats (approximately). The aquamarine sizes were calculated using a standard jeweler's caliper. The stones were tested using a jeweler's stone tester. The stones were not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight. There is a chip to one corner of the outside stone (see photos).
The metal content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. This piece is gold over silver. A later term for cased gold is rolled gold. There is wear commensurate with age and use on the reverse.
