Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a whimsical 14kt. yellow gold Griffin (Gryphon or Dragon) brooch in a classic Art Nouveau design c. 1890. The fierce animal is winged with a chased and textured body coiled like a serpent. The body is featured en repousee. The brooch is 1-1/8" (north to south dimension) X 1-1/8" (east to west dimension) (maximum dimensions). This piece features a secure safety clasp and weighs 5.9 grams.

Griffins were known in ancient times as the king of all the beasts. These creatures could have eagle features, talons, wings, snake like parts or a lion's tail, all rolled together to create a unique look. The griffin guards valuable belongings, including riches and loved ones in folklore. During the Victorian and Art Nouveau eras, griffins were featured in all manor of jewelry and personified fearlessness, bravery, courage, and vigilance.

The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The piece is marked "14kt." The piece has been in a safety deposit box and has appropriate storage tarnish.
