Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a stunning early Margot de Taxco (Margot van Voorhies Carr) brooch in sterling silver. This piece is her design #5768 and called the "Flowers in Curls" design. The pattern features dimpled blue enamel accented by white "freckled" enamel. The knotted swirl pattern is surmounted by fanciful flower buds in blue enamel. The brooch has a safety clasp. It is 2" X 1-1/2" wide (maximum dimensions). The back features a Margot maker's mark with "Margot de Taxco" + "5768" + Sterling + Made in Mexico. The brooch weighs 13.8 grams.
The silver content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The silver is marked "Sterling". The amethyst size was calculated using a standard jeweler's caliper. The amethyst was tested using a jeweler's stone tester. The stone was not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight.
Margot van Voorhies Carr, known as Margot de Taxco was married for a time to Antonio Castillos who was a partner in Los Castillos, a prominent silver manufacturer. She did a number of their designs in the late 30's and early 40's. When she left the marriage and started her own jewelry production, she started with many of her basic Los Castillos designs and modified them to her own tastes. This appears to be an early "crossover" design.
When you own vintage handmade jewelry, you wear a design that is unique and represents the artist's vision. It is made by a skilled craftsman and can have features which are only found in this piece. The jewelry may exhibit the marks of the craftsman. It will not be perfect. The jewelry will show age appropriate tarnish, unless we state otherwise.
