Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a 14kt. yellow gold BROOCH & EARRING demi-parure made in the Etruscan Revival style with millegraining, beading & piercing circa 1860. The brooch and earrings have natural, round white creamy seed pearls as accents. The real show is in the hand piercing work and the exquisitely finished gold work. The brooch is 1-1/2" wide X 1-1/4" tall and weighs 10.6 grams with a C-clasp. The earrings are 1-1/2" long and weigh 7.0 grams. The earring fixtures have been remodeled in their lifetime; however, the fronts are in excellent condition. Total weight is 17.6 grams.
During the mid 1800's excavation work in Egypt, Italy, Turkey and Greece helped fuel the desire for jewelry which looked ancient. Jewelers tried to re-create the granulation and goldwork techniques of the ancient world. Wirework, filigree and granulation replaced the engraving and 2 dimensional surfaces seen in earlier jewelry. Stones became secondary to the goldwork.
The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The pearls are assumed to be natural since the piece was produced prior to cultured or manmade pearls.
