Caroline's Jewelry with a Past is offering a Georgian era brooch in 18kt. yellow gold, c. 1830. A gorgeous piece, the brooch features a large faceted, foiled, oval pink topaz as the central focus. The topaz is mounted in a closed back setting. It is 17.4mm X 10mm with a large table on the stone. The repousee flowers and finishing work of the gold are very dimensional. There is a C-clasp pin stem that is slightly longer than the brooch (typical of the Georgian period). The brooch is 1-3/4" wide X 1-1/2" wide. The piece is in excellent condition. The brooch weighs 8.5 grams.

Repousee is metalwork that has been hammered into relief from the reverse side. A foiled gemstone has had a thin sheet of metal or other similar material applied to the back of a set stone to allow more light reflection into the stone. The stone is brighter. This is a technique that was primarily used extensivelyin the Georgian and early Victorian time period.

The gold content of this piece has been tested using standard accepted testing methods, such as acid testing. The topaz was tested using a jeweler's stone tester and measured for size using jeweler's calipers. The stone was not removed from the piece to do physical testing or for weight.
