A fascinating piece of American theatrical history, the bust of Charlie McCarthy, the dummy to Edgar Bergen's ventriloquism, is depicted in miniature gold plated base metal with enameled details to be worn as a dress or fur clip.
The topped hat bedecked fellow has a small lever below his cravat that opens and closes his mouth when pushed back and forth (instead of pulled downward).
Marked: Pat 2038343, Mf'd under exclusive license from Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Inc.
Measurements: 1-3/8" high including the lever x almost 7/8" wide
The pin/clip is referenced in Brunialti's Tribute to America on pages 66 and 67; advertised in Women's Wear Daily (with diagram) Oct 1937. The WWD ad states that the clip was manufactured by Coro.
Condition: near excellent with only the most minor hints of wear to the enamel.
