Nice Box Rosewood Veneer & Stone Mosaic Lid
This is a lovely small wooden box, rosewood veneer and brass inlays around all edges and corners. Around the lock a brass cartouche too.
The lid shows a wonderful stone mosaic, a typical Karlsbad (or Carlsbad) work. The mosaic is intricate and made of various hard stones, 2.8 x 1.3 inches. Mostly Aragonite, a stalactite stone from the Carlsbad Caverns (Bohemia) in wonderful colors: earth, chocolate brown, white and yellow and some malachite stones.
The middle stone shows the inscription Martha – fine engraved in the stone, not annoying.
Around the mosaic and on the rim small brass baguettes.
The interior ground is laid with blue velvet, a little bit faded but not worn. The lid is inside original white painted.
A wonderful piece in very good condition. Lock but not key.
Measurements: 4.2 x 2.8 inches, 1.8 inches height.
Nice size, small and elegant, several uses – jewelry boy, watch box, desk servant… in every case an eye-catcher!
Dated ca. 1880/1900.
