Whimsy Ship Picture Frame Woode and Sterling Birmingham 1926

This frame is very particularly … and partially mystifies me.

It has a wooden body (dark baited) with three compartments. The middle compartment could fit a picture (ca. 3 x 5 inches) and two lateral compartments. Each contains an old filmstrip fixed on a spool; it seems this spool can be turned by a knob to the top. I cannot move these knobs, probably because they got some rust. I have no idea how these spools and strips are to use, why they are relevant… But I am sure, these parts haven’t been in the last decades.

I found this frame on an antique market and was sure I will find something about. Unfortunately, negative! Even the present Patent number doesn’t help.

To the front a silver frame, English sterling (anchor and lion hallmark) from 1926 (letter B). Silversmith hallmarks present but not legible. On one side a register mark REG 107098. To the base a cartouche with the inscription Motor Ship and an anchor.

On the top part of the wooden body and to the frame the patent number 9964 – so they belong surely together.

The condition is good to very good. Some painting loss to the wood and some tiny dents to the silver frame.

Measurements: 7.4 x 5 inches, 1 inch in depth.

An unusual gift for a yacht skipper.
