19C Hand Carved and Engraved Mother of Pearl Reliquary Cross Crucifix
This is a superb old reliquary made about 1860/80.
The cross base is made probably of wood. It is covered by Mother of Pearl plaques. The front is wonderful ornate with fine engravings, depicting the instruments of passion. At the bottom of the cross a fine carving of the Virgin Mary. Jesus body (fixed on the cross) is a MOP carving too.
On the back side are the 14 cross stations written. For each station a round cavity covered by glass for relics. Some cavities seem to contain something, but I am not sure.
The cross has a wonderful border, small MOP baguettes with a twist-like carving. Four leaf ornaments are fixed in the middle.
The cross is in very good condition, considering age and material. The cross ends are decorated with small carved MOP pearl knobs, one is missing. This cross has been restored in the past, top knob and right side seem to be re-glued.
Measurements: 7.2 x 4.4 inches.
