Wooden Home Altar Engraving Woven Hair Cross

This is a very special old night table altar which seems to have a long history.
I bought it from the great-grandchild of the second owner noticed to the back side of the engraving.

I would like to present firstly the engraving. It is old, the first notice to the back side is dated 1853.

The wooden backside (not original) the was loosely, so I made some photographs before I have re-fixed it. I could find some information about the former owner. The icon is coming from a vicarage. The name of the first owner is illegible, but this icon has been past to Anna Maria Mayr von Notzen 1883, a vicarage housekeep – as her grand-grandchild told to me.

The camaieu blue engraving shows Mary, wearing simple but amazing clothes with wonderful collar with roses and cross. Mary is surrounded by a trompe l’oeil printed frame with crosses and some other ornaments.
The engraving is in good condition – commensurate to its age. Yellowish, age spots and water spot to report. But please consider, the engraving is a least 170 years old! It is protected by glass.

Mary is framed in a winged wooden frame. This has inside and outside beautiful open work ornaments. The open work shows two well done repairs. After my opinion is this frame younger than the engraving. I estimate it on about 1880.
The openwork is padded with brown color velvet (faded and some age traces, please look to the pictures.

I guess this altar had also a small pedestal (lost) , the wood to the base is not treated. But absolutely stable when opened.

Inside of the winged doors are two small medals – one made of sheet (Notre Dame de Louviere) and a star shaped pendant/medal depicting Virgin Mary – the glass is broken.
Additionally a little treasure – small cross made of woven hair. Fine worked with tiny pinchbeck ends. Small drop of bitterness – the hair is on sone side damaged. This cross has been made during the Romantic Period, ca. 1860.
Medals and cross are fixed with needles.

The table altar measures 5.8 x 8.8 inches closed and 10.8 x 8.8 when open. The hair cross measures 2 x 1.4 inches.

A beautiful and rare devotional despite the described imperfects.
