Wooden Jewelry Casket Dated 1890 Open Work Dog Horses Birds
This antique wooden box is a very special piece. It is a mix of chip carving (tramp art) and open work – the body is made of wood with tramp art work edges, sides and top are adorned with open work plaques with different views. To the front and back side birds, to the sides horses and to the top a lovely dog.
I am not sure if I am a hopeless romantic person or a good observer as I mean to recognize a stylized depiction of “Love, Faith and Hope”. Please study the sides depictions – the two horses are forming a heart, to the corners anchors and to the middle, crosses downriver to the horses. Fine and well done work.
The casket has a drawer, it shows the year 1890 and the monograms G S.
Inside lines with a kind of red paper(faded) and mirror to the lid – showing some expected silvering.
The condition of the box is good. Small chip to the drawer, the baiting is a little bit faded too.
One or two screws seems to be replaced. The present key is not working, only for show.
The box measures 9 x 7.6 inches and 7.2 inches in height.
A wonderful addition to any Folk Art collection.
