In all my years of selling I have NEVER seen anything like this extremely rare figural banquet table oyster plate! More than likely a special order, as far as I know this form is unrecorded, or at least I haven't found anything even close to it in the several oyster plate books i own. Measuring 12" high and about 8" wide, this piece is in perfect condition. Marked "Copeland" underneath, this mark was used from 1851 to 1885. I would imagine one of these each graced the end of a banquet table with individual plates at each setting. If not a special order, then this piece was surely made for Exhibition purposes. The delicately tinted pink oyster plate is held aloft by a merman or merboy, the attention to detail is superb. A truly remarkable find!
A to Z of the rare, unusual and always quirky Antique!
Although my shop will show a default setting of "No Layaways" I WILL consider them on an individual basis-please ask!
