This piece has to truly be seen to be believed! What I think it is, is a Victorian printed pillow cover which has then been completely beaded by hand. Every feather, every strand, every micro inch of both head dress and outfit has been beaded. There are initials worked into the lower left hand of the portrait. I am in the process of having the backing to the frame replaced as the old wood was cracked and falling off. This was enabling air to get in. The textile is on a stretcher and the frame is original to the piece. Overall the frame measures 24 1/2" by 25 1/2" and the textile itself measures 19" by 19 1/2". I can just make out in pencil on the old back 1896 with some other writing which if I manage to decipher, I will add to the listing. I can see ONE loose string of beading approximately 1" long near the initials and a tiny pulled or lifted thread in the plain background to the right of his face as shown. In 25 years of dealing with unusual textiles and beadwork-I have NEVER seen a piece like this!
