This Vintage 24kt Gold Plated Ormolu Jewelry Casket with Cherub Legs and Beveled Glass is in near MINT condition. It measures 6 ½” Long x 4 " Wide x 2 ½” High. The term Ormolu is from French or moulu, signifying ground or pounded gold. Ormolu is an English term that has been used since the 18th century for the gilding technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as bronze doré; in English, it is known as "gilt bronze". Do not be misled that all gold gilt is Ormolu. The test for Ormolu is a magnet- many items are iron with gold gilt but Ormolu is bronze and it is not attracted to a magnet. Ormolu is a much higher quality process and will look like new for many more years than the iron based items.
