Vintage 1925 Conklin Pen Company gold filled all-metal pencil with the Grecian Border pattern engraved on the barrel of the pencil. Manufactured by the Conklin Pen Company of Toledo, Ohio was patented on May 25, 1918. The company name and date of patent is engraved on the clip. The company name and place of manufacture are engraved on the cap. The pencil is cylindrical in shape with a tapered end. The term gold filled all-metal pencil means the manufacturer used a laminating process in which sheets of solid gold (either 12KT or 18KT) are fused to a base layer, normally of brass. The layers of gold on their pens and pencils were thick enough that they could be engraved with a name or initials on the nameplate area without exposing the base layer. This pen shows no trim wear or “brassing” due to the manufacturing process of layering the pencil with gold fill. The condition of this gold filled pencil is near mint and there are no initials or names engraved on the barrel nameplate. This beautifully crafted vintage pencil measures 5 ⅜” long.
