Vintage late 1970’s Hermann Original teddy bear. One of the oldest teddy bear producers in Germany, had its beginning in 1912 in Sonneberg, Germany. Founded by Bernard Hermann, he continued company operations in Sonneberg until 1948, when he grew tired of having to operate a company under the auspices of Russian control of East Germany, so he moved his operations to the U.S. Zone of West Germany to the city of Herschaid. This charming vintage teddy bear features dark brown mohair material with moveable arms, legs and head. Dating Hermann Original teddy bears is somewhat easier than with most collectible teddy bears. This vintage teddy bear has its company cloth tag located on the seam of the arm and the green embroidered thread used on white cloth was only used between 1945-1985. In 1953, the swing tag changed from a paper tag to a red plastic swing tag which indicates the bear was made in the late 1970’s. This vintage collectible teddy bear measures 12” high and 12” wide with arms outstretched and is in near mint condition. With much research I have not been able to determine if the gold link chain is original to the teddy bear, but the way it is fashioned and attached to the neck, it would appear to be so. The world famous plush toy company is now known as Gerbruder Hermann KG.
