This Art Nouveau hand-painted porcelain brooch is a stunning example of jewelry of the period between 1900-1910. It has a soft pastel blue background and a sumptuous gold-leaf overlay of an orchid in the center with very thin white edging. The border, also painted in gold leaf, has a scalloped pattern around the edges, which adds so much to the piece. The piece is so classic in design and feeling, and can be worn vertically or horizontally, and is in very good antique condition with a bit of normal wear from age on the gold leaf border. The brooch measures 1.50 inches wide x 2.0 inches in length and the back has a hand-made brass frame with a "C" closure, which was typical of the jewelry of that period.
The fashion trend back in those days was for young girls to paint their own jewelry, and this piece is just one in a collection that I have had stashed away for more than 30 years.
