Either a jewelry casket or sugar box. Overall excellent condition with expected gilt wear to edges considering this is over 150 years of age. Fine enamel painted florals and geometrics as shown, with perfectly smooth beveled corners/edges to protect it from damages. No chips, cracks or repairs and box opens easily and exactly as it should. Heavy for its size and measures about 4 3/8" long, about 3 1/4" tall, and 3 1/8" deep. A palais royale French blue opaline glass that likely dates to about c1850 or so. Extremely fine quality and an extremely pricey object in its day that if converted to today's dollars would stagger. If this were a sugar box this was used to protect it, as it was just as valuable as tea and other fine spices of the era......a very luxurious item for a rich patron's protection. I do not have a key, but one could inexpensively be acquired were it desired. Now includes free shipping and insurance.
