Manuel Felguerez Mexican Folk Art Metal Figurine Sculpture Merry Round Carousel - Extra Large
The Carousel, by Manuel Felguerez, is a whimsical, light-hearted sculpture that touches our inner chilld. He juxtaposes it with harsh materials and cubist forms and still maintains it's light spirit. The carousel measures 24" tall and 12" across and weights a hefty 14.9 pounds. This is a very rare sculpture and is seldom offered for sale. It's the pinical of Felquerez collectors. I will be listing more of my collection due to moving.
The Carousel is by Manuel Felguerez (born 1928) , a well-known, leading Mexican artist of paintings and sculptures, with a remarkable history of accomplishments. This is from the later 1960's. He started these sculptures in 1964. Paper-mache over iron cubist forms. Lovely patina on the blue, red and yellow, hand-colored paper-mache has not been re-touched. There is light corrosion under the carousel tent top, on the poles and trace amount scattered throughout that would be expected on his vintage iron pieces. Topped with an angled flag. (Please use the zoom feature.)The merry-go-round is stationary and does not rotate.
Later versions of the Merry-Go-Round sculpture was producted later by Arte Felguerez with "Felguerez" printed around the waist band of each figure. This sculpture does not have "Felguerez" around each waist band. "Felguerez" is hand signed on the base. The base is paper-mache over iron which dates it to earlier. Thought to be from 1966 when he first started to design the metal sculptures of children playing.
