Niello is a black metalwork method that fuses to a silver base. It holds a metallic luster that is very sturdy. Ancient Egyptians likely created this copper, silver, and lead sulphide technique. The Ancient Romans made use of it as well, spreading the practice throughout Europe during the Roman occupation. During the Renaissance, it met its height in popularity as Francesco Francia and Maso Finiguerra (both goldsmiths and artists) mastered the skill. The niello trend came back again at the end of the 18th century and stuck around until the beginning of the 20th century.
This antique niello link watch chain was handcrafted in England around 1880. It measures 16.5 inches in length and weighs 15.4 grams. This necklace bears the silver fineness mark, “800”. It also bears a maker’s mark.
This fantastic watch chain can be worn around the neck or wrapped around the wrist for a layered look.
Note: locket is shown with chain for reference only and is not included.
