A curated collection of fine Antique and Vintage jewels. 'Finding old jewelry new and loving homes.'
This gorgeous English Edwardian Double Snake Ring is a fabulous expression of duality. Most of us find it very difficult to wrestle with ambiguity, which is why, throughout history, great respect has been lauded upon those who seek to exist at the point of balance, on the cusp of opposing forces. Great wisdom and strength is required to occupy that seat, for one who understands the relationship between adverse elements and ideas understands life itself.
The enormous energy of this ring, made in Chester, England in 1912, is due to the artist’s choice of subject. Are they two serpents locked in eternal conflict, or one single snake with two heads? One snake is adorned with a blood-red ruby, and the other with a sparkling diamond, and each stone is surrounded by engravings of starry rays, seeming to suggest the mighty elements of fire and water. The curving lines of the serpents appear gracefully supple, while their eyes remain open, emotionless, determined. There are several hallmarks inside the band: the symbol for Chester, “M,” “9,” “.375,” and a maker’s mark. The ruby and diamond are each 2 mm round, and the face of the ring measures 3.4 by 21 mm, with a 10.4 mm thickness. It weighs 3.8 grams and is a size US 9.
The world is a complex place, and very little exists in the realm of absolutes. For some, that’s what makes life exciting.
