When this ring was made, the United States of America was called ‘The Colonies’ and was ruled by the British Empire. They weren’t the only ones, the British Empire extended to the ends of the globe. Sometimes I wish that the jewels I find could talk, but never so much as with pieces this old. We humans only live one lifetime, maybe one hundred years if we’re very lucky, but jewels like this one get to travel through multiple lives, and we can only imagine what tales this ring could tell of the three hundred or so years since its creation.
Hand crafted around 1720, perhaps in England, which is where I purchased it, this fantastic ring is as wearable today as it was when it was made. The stones in this ring are closed backed and foiled. The center stone is a stunning natural rectangular cushion shaped emerald, it’s a medium, vivid and strongly green stone that is likely to be untreated in any way. The emerald measures 9.2x7.7x4.7(?) mm and weighs approximately 2.02 carats. The emerald is surrounded by eight (8) table cut diamonds which add up to about .66 carats and 6 old mine cut diamonds which add up to about .56 carats for a total weight in diamonds of about 1.22 carats.
The face of this ring measures 17.9 mm north to south and 15.7 mm across, it sits 5.4 mm off the finger and narrows to 3.5 mm at the back of the band. It has been carefully acid tested as 18 karat gold and sterling silver, it weighs 5.3 grams and is a size 8.
