When the tombs of the Pharaohs were discovered in the 1920s, they were found to be littered with Scarab beetles, both the real, dried, bug kind and also the carved in stone, bead and icon kind. In ancient Egypt, the scarab was a symbol of protection and immortality, of resurrection and transformation, When Howard broke through to the tomb of Tutankhamun, it was found to be littered with thousands of strands of scarab beads and many were taken and turned into jewelry.
This particular Scarab would not have been found in a tomb, but was carved as a nod to the style of Egyptian revivalism that was one of the strongest undercurrents of the Art Deco style. This Scarab is carved in Nephrite Jade which measures 13.9x10x5.2 mm and weighs about 5.5 carats. The Jade is set in 10 karat gold and I think it’s quite possibly Egyptian in origin, made as tourist jewelry during the Deco era, about 1925. The face of this ring measures 14.9 mm from north to south and 20 mm across, it sits 6.3 mm off the finger and narrows to 3.2 mm at the back of the band. The beautiful shoulders of this ring have gorgeous stylized winged beetles on them. This size 7 ring weighs 5.9 grams. The ring is marked for 10 karat gold inside the band.
