I fell just a little bit in love with this stunning necklace. It has such lovely lines and a wonderful play of color. The first colors that a Victorian woman was able to wear after her first year of mourning were white and purple and so it’s likely that this necklace plays to that tradition, the first jewel that she would be able to wear after a year of nothing but black, imagine the joy of that!
Set with two rich, glowing violet amethyst gems and 36 creamy white pearls, this 15 karat gold pendant was likely made in England in about 1870. The pendant is set on a seed pearl chain necklace which measures 15.5 inches around the neck. The drop itself measures 2.5 inches long and 25.8 mm across, the entire necklace weighs 7.4 grams. The oval faceted amethyst measures 5.8x7.7x4.3 mm and weighs approximately 1.02 carats and the faceted teardrop amethyst measures 7x11.5x5.2 mm and weighs about 2 carats. This wonderful piece is marked to the reverse of the pendant with a makers mark of ’SS’ and a ‘15ct’ for 15 karat gold.
Hand crafted with wonderful detail, this pendant has white enamel looping details and there is a very slight bit of damage to the enamel on the upper right side, it’s not really noticeable to the naked eye, but easy to spot in these enlarged photos.
