"Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there."
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again."
Published in 1829, the poem "The Spider and the Fly" by Mary Howitt may well have influenced the maker of this wonderful spider necklace. Mary and her husband, William, were writers in the time of Dickens and Browning and were known to mix with the important literary figures of the day.
This spider would have a hard time frighting even a fly, though, as he’s entirely too beautiful to be scary. Hand crafted in the Victorian era, around 1880, this wonderful spider rests on an intricate web of golden wire. The pendant is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested as 9 karat gold, the turquoise gem measures 5.4x4 mm and overall the pendant measures 27.1 mm north to south and 19.8 mm across. It weighs 1.5 grams.
