Sometimes a thing comes into my hand for which I have no basis for comparison, it’s just that step more fabulous than any other example I’ve come across. That’s the way I felt when I opened the carved, wooden, original fitted box and discovered this unbelievable amazing Arts & Crafts style paste pendant. Sometimes paste pieces this exquisite were made to replicate the real thing so that they were a bit safer to wear if you were going out amongst the general public, like to the theatre, but other times pieces this exquisite were just created as jewels in their own right. Either way this pedant is so marvelous and so well finished on both sides that you could be tempted to flip the bale and wear it plain side forward.

This fantastic pendant is set with a sparkling old cut gem to the center which mimics a diamond of 3 carats or so, it’s even slightly off-white as many diamonds this size at this time would have been a bit yellow. Surrounding the center are four bright green paste gems made to mimic the finest in demantoid garnets and 12 white pastes. The outer frame contains 24 white pastes which are completely hand cut and hand set and perfectly mimic old cut diamonds in their sparkle and shine. The pendant has a single brown gem at the top which was likely colored this to mimic a precious topaz. the top bale matches with the three drops, each set with two green pastes and two-four white pastes. This pendant measures 73.5 mm from north to south and 27.3 mm across. It is not marked in any fashion but tests as silver. This piece was likely made in England in about 1890, it weighs 12.4 grams.

I’m happy to help you find a great chain for this piece if you need one, it certainly deserves something wonderful and a I have a fairly good selection of them.
