This perfume struck me in my own personal sentimental heart. There is an Irish lullaby that my father used to sing to me when I was still small enough to be rocked in his lap.
“In Dublin’s fair city, where the girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheelbarrow, through the streets broad and narrow,
Crying “cockles and muscles, alive, alive, oh”.
This fantastic cockle shell perfume bottle is beautifully hand crafted with an eye to detailed realism both front and back. The shell was probably originally meant to hang from a ladies chatelaine, but now is having a second life as a pendant. The decorative top pulls off and hangs from a chain of it’s own. This pendant measures 42 mm from to to bottom and 30 mm across, it’s 11.8 mm deep, it’s marked ‘sterling’ and has s couple of other small marks that we couldn’t fully make out. This piece weighs 8.5 grams.
Made in about 1870, I think sweet Molly Malone would approve of this particularly wonderful piece of history!
