Mary Russell Thew, was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1876. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art for a time in the 1890s, meeting and befriending Jessie Marion King and E.A. Taylor. She married in 1903, to James Mursell Thew, an engineer whose hobby was silversmithing. He often would make jewelry for his beloved wife and soon enough she began designing pieces herself. He passed away after only a few years of marriage, and Mary decided to take on the jewelry business to support her and her son. She took courses, and became a member of the “Greengate Close Coterie”, a group of artisans who gathered in Kirkcudbright for extended periods of time. She was also a member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. Inspired by her world travels and everything Arts and Crafts, she developed a signature design aesthetic, a free-flowing silver wire style with semi-precious gems, beads, abalone, marble, or in this case, art glass. Her work shows an understanding of space and decoration, it’s a balance between design and color. She passed away in 1953 after a lifetime of achievements and a body of beautiful work.
This antique Arts and Crafts Mary Russell Thew silver necklace was handcrafted around 1915 in Scotland. It boasts a beautiful triangular pink-bubblegum piece of art glass at the center of a silver setting on a 17.25 inch chain. Typically, her work was unsigned, as it is here, but her distinctive style makes it easy to spot! The pendant measures 29 x 28.2 x 8.5 mm. Overall, this necklace weighs 11.2 grams. This piece has been acid tested.
Her work was showcased all over the United Kingdom. Today, her work can be found in the collections of the Victorian and Albert Museum in London.
