Victorians loved lockets; a form whose history far exceeds that of the photographs we put in them these days. Originally the locket was used to hold a hand painted portrait hair, ashes, relics and good luck charms, but one thing is the same, it was always meant to keep something precious close to your heart. This one from the turn of the century, is handmade in a shape that is an homage to it intended purpose, a heart adorned in the colors of pure love.
This particular lovely Victorian locket has a solid 9 karat gold exterior with a metal inner frame, sometimes referred to as 'front and back'. It is set with three deep red garnets the color of rich wine-burgundy, and four velvety white pearls. Known for their love of all things symbolic, to the Victorians the color red was most closely associated with love, and white with purity. Worn close to the heart, this would have been a constant reminder of that special someone held inside. A very wearable size as a pendant or even a bauble on a bracelet, it measures 22mm x 14.5mm x 4.7mm, and weighs 1.1 grams.
