The word garnet originates from the Greek, ‘pyropes’, meaning “fiery-eyed”. It’s the perfect description for these glowing stones. Garnets have been in use since the Bronze Age, if not earlier. Prehistoric Egyptians used garnets as inlays in their jewelry and carvings that date as far back as 3100 BC. They claimed garnets were the symbol of life. The Ancient Romans fell in love with garnets during the 3rd and 4th century and often used them as signet rings. Bohemian garnets are a special shade of deep red. Bohemian garnets have been mined in the area we now call Czechoslovakia since the Middle Ages. By the 18th and 19th centuries, the popularity of garnets grew to their height. Bohemian garnets and their traditional dark red wine shade took over the jewelry market, including this very pair of earrings.
These antique Victorian Bohemian garnet earrings were handcrafted in England around 1890. Each teardrop-shaped cabochon-cut garnet is set in low karat garnet gold, and is bordered by a row of 17 smaller garnets, adding elegance and style. The large garnet measures 14.7 x 7.4 mm, while the smaller stones are 3 mm in diameter. Each earring’s overall measurements are 24 x 14.5 mm. Together, they weigh 8.2 grams. They are have a makers mark that reads, ‘WHC’.
For a night out on the town or in with the hubby, these glowing garnet studs will make the entire room look your way.
