The story of the tortoise and hare dates to the time of its teller, Aesop, a slave in Ancient Greece, around 500 BC. The story tells of a tale involving a slow-moving tortoise and a speedy hare. The hare ridicules the tortoise for his lack of quickness and so the tortoise challenges him to a race. The hare in his arrogance accepts. The tortoise falls behind but keeps steadily moving forward. The hare is so far ahead he decides to nap. When he awakes, he finds that the tortoise has won. It’s a fable of overconfidence and foolishness.
