A curated collection of fine Antique and Vintage jewels. 'Finding old jewelry new and loving homes.'
It’s not all that common of a job, the one that I have, and so often times when people ask me what I do, they are fascinated by the answer and pepper me with questions. Do you have a shop? (Not yet, coming soon) Nope, just online. Where do you get your jewelry? Europe, mostly England and France. Do you go there yourself? Yes, as often as I can. How do you know something is old? Experience, lots and lots of experience (and sometimes hallmarks and sometimes wonderful inscriptions). What’s the cooling thing you’ve sold? A snake carved from a mammoth tusk, but also, the things that have reunited family members with lost jewelry, like I once sold someone his three times great grandfathers memorial ring back.
This fantastic Silver Scottish Victorian brooch is all set to find its way back to its family, and with the power of the internet, it’s been known to happen. So, here goes, this brooch was a gift, from the members of a woman’s church. The inscription on the back reads “To Mrs Tho(ma)s Gardiner, by the members of the Free Church of Old Machar as a small token of their esteem. 15th May, 1867”. The Free Church of Old Machar is now called St. Machar, and is in Aberdeen, Scotland. This fantastic brooch was probably made by a local craftsman using native granite which has been carved into beautiful shapes, it was done around the year 1867. Hand crafted in sterling silver, this exquisite piece measures 59.1 mm across and 42.3 mm north to south, it weighs 25.4 grams. This piece has no marks other than the inscription, it tests as sterling silver.
Maybe you are related to the Mrs. Thomas Gardiner who was so highly esteemed by her church? Maybe you need to bring Great, Great, Great-grandmother’s brooch home?
