A freshwater pearl mussel can live to be 130 years-old. More than half the world’s population of recruiting pearl mussels can be found in the rivers of Great Britain. They’re protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 as their population is threatened by a plethora of environmental factors such as illegal harvesting, water pollution, and exotic species. The most precious natural pearls are those with a beautiful luster and a round shape, they were extremely rare during the Victorian period, as a mollusk typically creates an odd shaped pearl in whatever color their nacre is. This set of jewelry was inspired by the wonderful freshwater pearl mussel. It’s a creature whose stature looks angelic when open, and who looks quiet and full of secrets when it’s closed.
This three-piece set consists of a pair of silver mussel earrings and a matching brooch. Each piece features a detailed mussel shell with a silver ‘pearl’. They were handcrafted during the Victorian era in England. The earrings are 40.5 x 12 x 10 mm and the brooch is locket backed with gold frames, measuring 42 x 27 x 11.5 mm. Together, this set weighs 12.4 mm.
For a nature-inspired accessory with a unique and antique flair, this set of silver mollusk pieces will do!
