This rare and wonderful Victorian celluloid manicure box comes from my personal collection; I’ve had it for about 30 years, where it’s been a fixture on my mantle year-round. I’ve only seen one like it in all these years. The condition is the same as when I purchased it. Please note, this was kept out of the sunlight and away from any heat source.
You are looking at a stunning and quite rare large antique Victorian upright dresser box with a curved top, which is covered in Christmas holly/berries & features gorgeous winter scenes, along with ornate embossed gold & green scrollwork with faint touches of deep red.
It measures 12 ¾” tall, 11 5/8" wide from back feet to feet & approx. 6¾" deep, measuring from the side to the front of the drawer.
The top and center feature beautiful snowy winter scenes, with raised gold & green embossed detail surrounding each scene.
There is a gold metal closure at the bottom of the curved top, which closes the center portion. The top portion would have held a hand brush, mirror & comb. The center opens to reveal a mirror on the back and designated areas which would have held manicure items. The side doors each have an area where one manicure item would have been. There is a bottom drawer which was probably used to store jewelry. The top, bottom center portion, the sides and bottom drawer are lined in a faded light mint green silk. The silk has brown spots throughout, but especially the top and also the bottom drawer. The center, where manicure items once were, shows some stains and tears mainly where manicure items were held.
Considering this piece is approx. 120 years old, it’s in remarkably good condition. Please note the following: There is some yellowing to areas of the celluloid, which appear darker in the photos than in person; the drawer handle slips out at times when opening, but it slips right back in. I’m sure you won’t be opening this often, if at all. There are some pieces of celluloid missing, the largest two being on the back (thank goodness), located on the lower left foot & by the left edge where the top lifts up. On the curved top at the very back right edge, there is a small piece missing with a tiny crack next to it. On the front right & left doors, there is a small piece missing on the side of each door; also a tiny piece on the front “foot” at the upper left side. The left side of the drawer has a small ½” crack, which hasn’t lifted; it is flat to the touch. There are seems which are lifting slightly, but this is all very normal for a piece this age. If I missed anything it is very minor. The mirror has minor tiny dark spots, which are age related. There are no cracks to the mirror. What I just described sounds far worse than what it actually is. The front and sides look amazing.
This gorgeous piece will certainly enhance any celluloid collection; it is truly magnificent.
