You are looking at a stunning antique French Tambour embroidered deep claret red silk velvet pelmet/valence, which dates to the late 1800s. This comes from a French Chateau.
Originally this would have been above a window or doorway although it could be used on a mantel or, if you open up the top edge, you could place a long pillow insert inside and make a spectacular, long pillow.
The rich deep claret red silk velvet is thick and luxurious. Please note I tried to capture the true color of this piece; I lightened the close up of the Tambour flowers so you could see the workmanship.
The back of the pelmet is lined in the original gold colored cotton.
The Tambour embroidery work is simply gorgeous and beautifully worked.
Scrolls and acanthus leaf curls with flower blooms and trailing foliage is on either side. The center has a lattice cartouche with more central flowers and foliage.
The petals are very intricate with tiny silk stitches and the gold color scrolls are worked in a slightly thicker cord.
The sides and bottom edge are trimmed with coordinating passementerie trim of a braid and small stubby tassels.
The measurements are: approx. 60" across the top edge, including the tassels & 17" top to bottom of tassels.
The overall condition is excellent. There are some small dark spots below the top edge, which are difficult to see (see pic, which I've lightened; they pretty much blend into the velvet). The silk velvet is in superb condition, with minimal wear & what may possibly be a small discoloration on the right side, below one of the flowers (see pic). Due to the nap on silk velvet, you will see color variance depending on the directions of the nap. There are no odors.
This outstanding pelmet/valance is absolutely breathtaking and will enhance any French/Shabby Chic/Country decor. You will love this piece.
