PLEASE NOTE MOST PHOTOS HAVE BEEN LIGHTENED; THE TRUE COLOR IS A RICH, TRUE RED (SECOND PHOTO). ALSO THE BACK SILK COLOR IS THE DARKER OF THE TWO PHOTOS.
You are looking at a gorgeous & rare antique Victorian beaded & needlepoint fire screen, which is attached to the original brass bar & adjustable brass fireplace mount. Finding a panel on the original mount, along with the adjustable mount is very rare. If you have other beaded or needlepoint panels, you can always switch them out, if desired; the brass bar will accommodate a wider panel since only six of the eight rings are currently being used.
The background of panel is done in red wool needlepoint. The flowers & leaves are done in clear glass beads with marcasite color beads outlining each one; the beads glisten in person. The looped fringe & decorative detail above it are done in clear glass beads. Faded red & cream color twisted rope trim surrounds the entire piece along; the same trim is hanging down on each side, with two silky tassels at the ends. They twisted rope trim along the top edge is sewn onto brass rings which are permanently attached to the brass bar.
The adjustable brass fireplace mount is movable in two areas; the actual mechanism that holds the mount in place is intact, but the screw mechanism has an ever so slight bend which restricts the closure to 1 ¼" (in other words, your mantle would need to be at least 1 ¼" thick for this to fit properly). The slight bend appears to have been caused by screwing this on tightly to a mantle over the many, many years it was used.
The back is done cream & red silk, which shows wear mainly on the red stripes. There is some shattering of silk, but it's rather minimal.
The overall condition is excellent, with age related wear to the silky tassels & brass mount, along with a loose thread on two sections of the decorative beadwork above the fringe (see pics: one is in the center; the other is on the left side). Other imperfections have been noted within the description. This would be an easy fix. I don't see any missing beads and there are no stains or odors. There may be a few missing needlepoint stitches. Considering this piece is well over 100 years old, it's in wonderful condition.
The dimensions are: 19 ½" top to bottom from twisted rope trim to bottom of looped fringe, taken from the longest center portion; 16" across the center portion, from trim to trim. The longest rope & tassel is 13" long. The brass metal bar is approx. 20 ½" long & has eight permanently attached brass rings, so it can accommodate a larger panel (this panel uses only six of the eight rings). The entire length of the brass arm/mount is approx. 18" (to the end of the closure portion).
Please check out the other antique beaded panels I have listed; they are all gorgeous.
