This late 1800's upright celluloid manicure box is huge and absolutely stunning. It's quite rare to find a piece this large in wonderful condition.
The celluloid top has a dome shape & the celluloid front features a curved design; the base is celluloid and the sides are velvet, which has worn off; the back is plain textured paper.
As you can see, the front features a pretty young lady dressed as a goddess; ornate raised gold scrollwork surround her. The celluloid on each side is raised & textured as is the burgundy colored base. The celluloid lid is done in a mottled copper color and features raised embossed work on each side and a woman set in a cameo style setting, with floral detail above and below. The sides swing open if desired, and display miscellaneous nail items, along with items which were probably used for crocheting or knitting; the scissors are marked Germany. Inside, the contents include a hand mirror, brush, nail buffer & two rouge pots. There is also a piece which has broken off so only the handle remains. The lining is done in teal silk, which is in very good condition considering the age and delicate nature of silk. The back portion inside features a mirror which has cording surrounding it; it is set in gorgeous ruching.
The overall condition of this box is excellent, with the following to note: a bit of celluloid is missing on the lower right edge and on the back left edge (see pics). There is an approx. 1 ½" piece of celluloid on the right edge which has lifted (see pic) & has a couple teensy cracks on the lifted portion only. I wouldn't do a thing to this; just leave it as. The paper on the back has some slight loss of paper. I didn't have enough picture space to show this, but if you want to see this, please email me and I'll send you a picture. This obviously can't be seen when displayed. The inside silk lining has faded over time & is a bit dirty/dusty in places, but it's in remarkable condition. The inside does have a musty odor, which so many of these pieces have. As noted above, the sides were velvet, but most of the velvet has worn off over time. There are no torn or worn spots. The hand mirror and comb both have cracks in the handle; the mirror on the hand mirror is completely worn & the handle underneath has a few chips.
This piece measures 15" across the base, 7" wide & 11 ½" tall.
This magnificent Victorian celluloid upright manicure case/box will certainly enhance any Victorian or celluloid collection; it's a real beauty.
